Factor-Biased Efficiency Gains from Exporting: Evidence from Colombia

创建于 更新于

摘要

This paper develops a production-function framework with two factor-augmenting efficiencies and a Hicks-neutral component to identify factor-biased productivity gains from exporting in Colombian manufacturing (1981–1991). It finds that entry into exporting raises unskilled-labor productivity by about 9.4% per year, with no detectable change in skilled-labor or Hicks-neutral productivity, yielding approximately a 2% per year rise in total factor productivity. The two worker types are estimated to be gross complements, so the gains are unskilled-labor-saving and shift production toward higher skill intensity. The observed post-entry dynamics are accompanied by machinery investment and within-plant upgrading, consistent with technology upgrading upon export entry [page::0]
